Designing Al Marmoon
Dezigntechnic was recruited to conceptualize and design the wayfinding package at Al Marmoom. An actual bird's nest influenced the design of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. When we first began the project, our goal was to develop a wayfinding system that would blend with the birds’ natural environment. So the visitors can get up close and personal with the sanctuary's birds.
One of the most challenging aspects of this project was measuring the Reserve accurately for mapping because it was located in a desert and had so many intriguing places to explore. Therefore, we carefully emphasized and chose each area for markers. Each marker is clearly visible from a wide distance, allowing individuals to quickly determine their location. These markers are 15 meters high and help people to explore the reserve with ease. Further, we added an alphabetical sequence that allows people to navigate into the desert and find their way by simply following the alphabetical sequence combined with large maps. These features make navigating the area simpler by enabling people to see the wayfinding signage even from their cars.
Our aim was to create signs that fit the natural look of Al Marmoom as a brand. We used natural colours and wooden pieces to create a stunning natural vibe in our work here. Many of the signs we erected here have a wood-burned look, giving the displays a beautifully rustic and organic feel. When viewed in person, the works have the distinct ability to stand out while being unobtrusive to the surroundings. They are visible enough to give value to users eager to find their way around the Reserve without interfering with the Reserve's pristine beauty.
